File System

 

There are different types of file system. They are as follows.

1. FAT     (FILE ALLOCATION TABLE)

2. NTFS  (NEW TECHNOLOGY FILE SYSTEM)

3. EXT2, EXT3, EXT4, SWAP

4. HPFS  (HIGH PERFORMANCE FILE SYSTEM)

5. CDFS  (COMPACT DISK FORMAT SYSTEM)

6. UDFS  (UNIVERSAL DISK FORMAT SYSTEM)

 

1. FAT (FILE ALLOCATION TABLE)

 

In FAT there are two types.

 

A. FAT 16 FILE SYSTEM

B. FAT 32 FILE SYSTEM

 

A. FAT 16 FILE SYSTEM

v  FAT 16 file system support only 2 GB of the Hard disk space.

v  FAT 16 file system support operating system.

§  DOS (Disk Operating System)

§  Win 95

§  Win 98 SE

v  FAT 16 file system does not provide security to data/ files.

v  FAT 16 file system does not support NON-DOS partition.

Note: For instance, if we install windows 98 SE operating system using FAT 16 file system and rest of the other partitions are in NON-DOS then those partitions will be Hidden/not-visible.

 

A. FAT 32 FILE SYSTEM

v  FAT 32 file system support more than 2 GB but not more than 32 GB of the hard disk space.

Note: This can be experienced while we are installing win 2000/WinXP/Win 2003 Server operating system.

v  FAT 32 file system support operating system.

§  DOS

§  Win 98

§  Win XP

§  Win 95

§  Win 2000 family

§  Win 2003 server

v  FAT 32 file system does not provide security to data/files.

v  FAT 32 file system does not NON-DOS partition.

2. NTFS  (NEW TECHNOLOGY FILE SYSTEM)

v  NTFS support large disk space.

v  NTFS support operating system.

§  WIN XP PRO

§  WIN VISTA

§  WIN 7

§  WIN 8

§  WIN 10

§  WIN 2000 FAMILY

§  WIN 2003 SERVER

§  WIN 2016 SERVER

§  WIN 2008 SERVER

§  WIN 2012 SERVER

v  NTFS is more secured than FAT32 file system.

v  NTFS is a user friendly.

v  NTFS is soon affected by birus.

3. EXT2, EXT3, EXT4, SWAP [2G]

v  It support large disk space.

v  It support operating system.

§  UNIX

§  FEDERO HPFS

§  SAMBA SERVER

§  LINUX

§  SUSE

§  U BANTU

v  It is more secured than NTFS.

v  It is not a user friendly.

v  It is leastly affected by birus.

v  It is mainly used for security purpose.

4. HPFS  (HIGH PERFORMANCE FILE SYSTEM)

v  HPFS support large disk space.

v  HPFS is more advance than FAT32.

v  HPFS support operating system.

§  MACAINTOSH [MAC]

v  HPFS is more secured than FAT32.

v  HPFS is not a user friendly.

v  HPFS  is not at all affected by virus.

5. CDFS  (COMPACT DISK FORMAT SYSTEM)

v  It is for small capacity disk like CD-R/W.

For example: 700MB [CD]

6. UDFS  (UNIVERSAL DISK FORMAT SYSTEM)

v  It is for big capacity disk like DVD-RW


For example:

4.7 GB [DVD]

8.5 GB [DOUBLE LAYER]

50 GB  [BLUE RAY DISK]
